Hey gang,

This week we're covering the basics of how to voice a chord, types of structure, spacing, & parallels.

A few points:

Open structure: soprano & tenor are an octave or more apart.
Close structure: soprano & tenor are less than an octave apart.

Spacing: there cannot be more than an octave between soprano & alto or alto & tenor.

Objectionable parallels: 5ths & 8ves (parallel, parallel by contrary motion, unequal, direct)

We'll also sit in on Ms. Woolf's lecture recital Wednesday for some applicable chord analysis.

Hey gang,

I'm grading the interval quizzes right now and will get the grades posted sometime tomorrow. Hope you did well... :)

We started working with other pitch collections today. ("Other" as in not major/minor scales.) Here are the ones we talked about:

Pentatonic (Major, Hirajoshi, Minor & Blues)
Whole tone
Octatonic

Your homework for Monday, Sept. 12, is to write two 2-bar melodies, each implementing a different pitch collection (from the list we talked about today).

We will resume with church modes on Monday.

Hi gang,

I'm very excited about this year and am thrilled to have you in this class. We're going to be listening to a lot of great music as well as learning howto listen to great to music.

Please visit the blog regularly. I've already posted the syllabus, and there will be other important information posted (homework assignments, etc.) as well. It's very important that you begin reviewing your key signatures and intervals now. We will be moving on to new material in September so it is crucial that you have a solid foundation upon which to build.

Keep reviewing the theory we've covered in your previous vocal classes, and we'll pick up with that on Thursday. We'll have the AP Theory pre-test next week, either Monday or Tuesday.

Eek, it's almost here!

Don't forget that you have a quiz Wednesday over the minor progression we talked about in class: i - V64 - i6 - V65/iv - iv - iv6 - V. Make sure you can write a bass and soprano line to go with this (you may use the one we did in class) in ANY minor key. Also, don't forget that the cadence at the end is phrygian half...

The last morning ear training session will be this Thursday at 7:30 am. Please try to be on time so we can beat the bells & intercom announcements.

We'll have an AP Exam Day Breakfast Monday morning before the exam. Meet in the conference room at 7:15 am.

Ch. 6 test

Don't forget that tomorrow we'll have our Ch. 6 test. I've left a 3-measure roman numeral progression on the board in the piano lab. Your test consists of providing a correct SATB root-position realization of the chords with good, smooth voice-leading. Once that is complete, you should arrange your composition for 4 instruments, at least 3 of which should be transposing. You may use your text book.

I'd also like you to turn in your homework that was assigned Tuesday. It was a 2-bar progression in D major: I - vi - IV - V- vi - IV - V - I.

*Write the English translation in the provided score. Make sure each word is matched with the corresponding Italian word.

*Listen to the aria 3 more times while following the score.

How does Puccini use the music (not text) to convey Musetta’s character? Write a paragraph giving at least 3 examples. Don’t forget to examine the last 4 bars of p. 138 – the orchestra’s introduction always has something to say about the character! (It might be a good idea to write a verbal description of her character first so you have some direction.)

Viva la Boheme!

Hey guys!

Congratulations: by the time you read this you've probably made it to fall break. Enjoy the time off!

Update: I'm finalizing the details of our trip to l'opera. We'll be seeing La Boheme as performed by the Atlanta Opera at the Cobb Energy Center on Oct. 7. You should be aware that it's only a 55-minute version, not the full opera. We'll be spending approximately 2 class periods prior to studying the opera as well as Puccini's compositional style and role in music history. If you have a chance over the break, check out some of the music and begin familiarizing yourself with the plot.

The Ch. 3/Autumn Leaves quiz until Monday, September 27. Make sure you're ready for it. There is a good review on pp. 54-55 in your textbook. The quiz will be structured as follows:
Written portion - 80% (ID/writing chords, realizing figured bass, 1 or 2 short answers re: history of figured bass)
Playing Autumn Leaves (1st 8 bars)- 20%

We'll finish watching La Boheme (Australian Opera/Baz Luhrmann) on Monday.

Thanks for being prepared with your homework - I know it might have been a bit of scale-overload for some of you... BUT, the quicker those scales & key signature come to you, the easier your life is going to be in this class.

Complete the packet I distributed in class. (Justin, you'll need to come by and pick this up tomorrow.) Make sure you use the key provided to check your work.

Key Signature quiz Thursday. Be prepared to identify any written key signature, write any key signature, write any scale, identify any scale, as well as tell me how many #s/bs are in any key signature. See me tomorrow if you've any questions.

Hey gang,

I'm thrilled to have each of you in AP this year. We have a lot of ground to cover together, so it's important that you keep up with your assignments, etc. and let me know if you need some extra tutoring on a certain subject. It's going to be a great year!

Homework for Tuesday, 10 August:
*Using provided staff paper, write out all major & minor scales. Include all 3 versions of each minor scale. (Total: 48 scales) Ascending & descending. Clef of your choice.

Key Signature Quiz is coming up Thursday, 12 August. You should be able to identify a given key signature OR provide the key signature I ask for. All major AND minor keys. Be prepared for Alto & Tenor clefs to be used... There are some great exercises in Ch. 1 of your text, fyi...
